About IP Addresses
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. Your IP address serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.
The IP address shown above is your public IP address, which is the address used to identify you on the internet. This is different from your local IP address, which is used only within your own private network (e.g., your home Wi-Fi network).
Why would you need to know your IP address?
- Online Gaming: To host a game server that friends can connect to.
- Remote Desktop Access: To connect to your computer from another location.
- Technical Support: A technician may need it to help diagnose network issues.
- Proxy Detection: To check if your VPN or proxy server is working correctly.
